Google press event on January 5th featuring 'Android'

The amount of buzz Google as generated by giving out the Nexus One to their employees has been explosive. So explosive that Google seems to feel confident enough to have a head start on the CES event that is scheduled just days after Google’s event.  Google sent invitations to a lucky some of tech sites and press organizations for an event on January 5th in their home town.

Google wants the press to gather around for an Android event in Mountain View, which is super exciting news because Android is already riding a huge buzz wave with the Motorola Droid and Droid Eris. For Google to keep up such hype even months after the launch of a flagship device is pretty impressive. Something that Palm, with WebOS, and Microsoft, with Windows Phone 6.5, seem to be struggling to do. So place your bets folks, Nexus One? Google Phone? A super Android Tablet? Whatever it is, we know it has to do with Android and that means we are talking about the mobile segment of tech, so we will let you know exactly what they will be showing at said event. Stay tuned folks, our guts tell us it is something big.

Google's 'Nexus One' smartphone - Biting the hand that feeds?

As I discussed HERE last week, the Nexus One has surfaced and in the excitement of this pure Google Android smartphone hitting the market in the near future, some questions need to be asked.

The Nexus One is reportedly an ‘unlocked’ GSM phone that will be able to put on any U.S. GSM carrier’s network; T-Mobile is first in line for the new device but could potentially be put on AT&T’s network as well.  It’s not clear how wide-ranging Google’s ambitions are for the phone. Unless Google is willing to sell the phone at a loss, the Nexus One is likely to be much more expensive than Apple’s iPhone and similar devices, which receive subsidies from wireless carriers.

Will Google bet on generating enough ad revenue shown on mobile web sites to and applications downloaded to offset the subsidies?  If they don’t subsidize the Nexus One, industry analysts don’t expect it to have much impact on the smartphone market.

The iPhone has been the biggest source of mobile traffic to Google’s mobile services during the past two years, according to Google executives.  If Google decides to sell its own handset, it would intensify its budding rivalry with Apple.  So, since this is a direct competitor to the iPhone, will Google’s attempt at taking a bite out of Apple’s smartphone market share be akin to biting the hand that feeds?

Google Mail with HTC Hero: a perfect match

I’ve had my Hero almost four weeks.  I was so impressed by it that I posted here after just two days of use.  I’m pleased to say I still view my HTC Hero as a marvel of design and function.  HTC’s motto, “quietly brilliant”, is an apt one.

Many of the Hero’s good features are standard among Android phones.

Google integration

Foremost among these is the effortless access to Google mail, contacts and calendar.  Updates to email status are reflected on the Hero within a few seconds.  All my contacts are there and available…  since getting my Hero I have tidied these, and the recently released Gmail feature “Find duplicates” has been very helpful.

Part of the ease with which email is handled is due to the notification bar at the top of the Hero’s screen, a simple yet effective feature: emails, messages, software install status, connection options.  Drag the notification bar down the screen and the full list is displayed.  For example, if the Hero has just been connected by USB to a computer, the notification list includes a button to enable the phone’s SD card as a flash drive and another to run HTC Sync.

Google Talk is handled equally seamlessly.  The notification bar tells me someone has started a chat with me.  Drag down the bar and tap the link to open the Talk app.  Easy.  I use Google Talk from my Windows PC, but on the Hero it’s so much more useful.

Twitter and the Web

I use Twitter daily and started out using the HTC’s Peep app, finding it met most of my needs.  I’ve since switched to Twidroid Pro for improved usability and customization.  Both Peep and Twidroid will indicate arrival of new tweets via the notification bar and these are easily accessed from the drag down list.

The Hero’s web browser works well, and the multi-touch zoom is smooth and controlled.  Visual bookmarks are a nice feature, as is “share this page” with options for SMS, email and Twitter (Peep or Twidroid).  The browser supports multiple windows, selected via a nice mini display of the each  window’s content.

Customization

Customization of the Hero is one of its strengths.  The phone comes with an array of high quality HTC widgets including browser bookmarks, calendar, clock, mail, messages, music, photos, stocks and Twitter.  HTC recently published four additional widgets specifically for Hero and Eris users: battery status, dice, “today in history” and a tip calculator.

HTC’s Sense desktop has seven panels, so there’s lots of room for your chosen apps and widgets.  HTC have extended this further with what they call “scenes”, which are custom saved desktops.  You could have one for general use, another for socializing and others for commuting, business, sports events, etc.  Each scene can provide easy access to the apps and widgets that you need for those activities.

Summing up

The Hero is a quality product.  Everything about it says “quietly brilliant”.

HTC Sense UI for iPhone

Here’s a screenshot  of HTC Sense UI running on my iPhone. It’s a great mod but as UI mods go for me, they’re more novelty than replacement. But that’s just me. Regardless, a job well done and instructions can found here (complete with a demo video as well): http://www.redmondpie.com/htc-hero-sense-ui-on-iphone/.

I know that there are different versions of this mod (like the one in MacThemes) but I’m just linking to the one I used. Also, my screenshot features the mod further modded by me! Safari on the left of Phone and Games on the right. If you would like these buttons, just comment and attach your email.

Which cell phone should my wife get? HTC Moment, HTC Hero. BlackBerry Tour, or Palm Pixie?

Question:
I just need help weighing out the Pros and cons.
Answer:
Here's what I got from all of them and I know alot about phones:

Samsung Moment

Pros:
Fastest processor (800 mhz) for Sprint phones
Physical Keyboard
AMOLED is amazing
Visual Voicemail

Cons:
Battery is the worst out of them all
Bulky and heavy
Slider build quality can come into question with lots of uses
Android 1.5

HTC Hero

Pros:
Sense UI
Visual Voicemail
5.0 MP camera
Solid hardware and amazing trackball but screen is problem

Cons:
No physical keyboard
Pull E-Mail
No flash
Get's laggy
Can get dust under touchscreen
LED display
No proximity sensor, you have to lock it manually

Tour

Pros:
Amazing keyboard
Push Email
Texting is amazing
Personally I had better service on Tour than any of these
Solid hardware built
Best battery out of all the phones
International

Cons:
Freezes
No Wi-Fi
Not a touch screen
Web browser sucks

Palm Pixi (go for the Palm Pre it's essentially a Pixi thats faster and have Wi-Fi, but i'll give you the pros and cons based on Pixi)

Pros:
WebOS -> MULTITASK
Synergy
Small and thin
Keyboard is decent
Solid Build
AMAZING Browser

Cons:
No enough apps
No Wi-Fi
Slower than Pre

It comes down to what you want to use your phone for. If you are a person who sents lots of emails and texts Blackberry Tour is for you, it's battery lasts forever and nothing can beat a Blackberry when it comes to emailing and texting. If you are also thinking of traveling overseas this is the only phone that can work overseas on GSM networks.

If you are a person who like to customize your phone and like apps like the iPhone, go for the Hero or Moment (you can choose between them, basically you'll know once you feel it). Android is amazing and Android 2.0 will be the best. It's open source, there's tons of apps and if you are going to be having this phone for 2 years then Android is the way to go, by 2012 Android will have most of the market in smart phones.

If you like to multitask and like web surfing get the Palm Pixi or Pre. This phone will make your life so much simpler, it syncs up contacts like no others. WebOS hasn't become popular but once the other wireless carriers gets WebOS the app store will be flooded.

Personally I have a Pre, however I am going to switch it for a Tour or Hero, the Moment has the worst battery, even compared to my Pre (my Pre doesn't last a day, I have to carry a charger around, and I text, email, and web surf alot). The only thing that is holding me back from getting a Tour is it doesn't have Wi-Fi. I am at school so I basically have Wi-Fi everywhere I go. If Moment's battery was better I would going for it since I am a big fan of physical keyboards (I had a touch pro before). I am however a big fan of Google. If you do alot of stuff on Google then I would go for Moment or Hero, plus Android 2.0 is going to be amazing. I hope this helps, if you need more info just email me. What's on your 2009 Christmas wishlist?

Nothing commemorates the holiday season like Black Friday.  Some of you might say Thanksgiving or holiday lights or snow commemorate the season.  I boldly puport that the smell of a new gadget rings in the holiday season like no other.  So, with that in mind, what is on your Christmas list?  Here’s mine!

Eris features Sense UI, pinch and zoom web browsing, and a haptic keyboard

HTC's budget powerphone this holiday

HTC Droid Eris (Verizon) for $99 is smartest gift you can give to someone this holiday.  This little phone features a beautiful screen, a multitude of google enabled apps backed by the Android platform and all of it brought to you via the skin of HTC’s patented Sense user interface.

providing extraordinary exclusive gaming and Blu-Ray experiences.

While receiving massive criticism for exhorbitant pricing the last three years, this year the Sony Playstation 3 is availble to the masses for $299.  As the third iteration of Sony’s gaming station enters its fourth holiday season, many industry critics and analysts deem this console as perfectly priced to sell big this holiday season.  Combine the new, lower price point with several exclusive titles like Infamous, Uncharted 2, and Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time, and the PS3 looks like a winner.

Sony's Portable platform enables movies, music, video and gaming. What's better?

Sony’s portable device, while not as commercially popular as the Nintendo DS series, has already sold over 50 million consoles through its four iterations on the market.  While the PSPGo is the most current model, I would prefer a model (1000 – 3000) that plays Sony’s proprietary Universal Media Disc (UMD) movies (shown above).  With the ability to play games, watch movies and video, and listen to music, this is the best portable device to have outside of an HTC Droid Eris.

This 60" DLP HDTV does 3D, 1080p, 120HZ and many other alphanumberic combinations you can imagine.

With the impending resurgency of  3D in our home entertainment experience.  I want to prepare for the immediate future with the Mitsubishi WD-60737. This 1080p, 3D enabled HDTV to supports all my entertainment needs.  Hopefully, I can do so before 2010.   I have shown you my wish list, now tell me yours.

Blackberry curve or instinct s30?

Question:
ok ill give you guys a little background story first. i originally planned on getting the htc hero on december 1 (my contract expired yesterday). i got there and instead of being the $30 i thought it was going to be ($179-150 for the 2 year upgrade=$29) it was $350....ny parents said no. so we went to another sprint store to get an instinct. they only had 1 left and guess who got it... my sister... so i got the BB curve. so i take it home and try to send out some texts but it wont send them. we call sprint and the stupid guy didnt even activate the phone! the good thing is they do this thing were you have 30 days to see if you like the phone and if not you can take it in and get the new one. im not a big fan of blackberrys so im tryin to decide on wether or not to trade it in for the instinct. what do you guys vthink i should do? by the way ill use the phone for things like gaming music and myspace. what phone do you think i should get?
Answer:
If you use it for myspace, and facebook and stuff like that you should stay with the curve. I am getting a curve this weekend. My neightbor has the instinct. She likes it for the texting, but other than that it is kind of an over rated phone. Hope this helps.

Would it be wise to E-Bank on my mobile phone?

Question:
I have just bought the new HTC Hero (G2) phone.
Which comes with Android Operating System and is connected to the net 24/7.
I was told by my operater that this phone doesn't have anti virus software nor does it need one.

I haven't a clue how safe the Android OS is, but with this info.. do you think it would be wise to internet bank on my phone ??
Answer:
The Android OS was originally developed on the Linux OS base and was purchased and further developed by Google in and around 2007. Google have built in certain safeguards, including one which prevents the distribution of adult content (pornography).

I am uncertain whether this is bombproof as far as hacking is concerned, it is not so much a case of antivirus being installed- is there a firewall?? This is far more important if you are using personal info such as banking details.

From a purely personal standpoint- and I may be overcautious- I would never use a mobile phone for anything other than person to person contact with someone that I trust. I do use online services but only through a trusted firewall and with full security in place.

hope this helps. Source(s): 12 years interest in IT Security

HTC Hero updated to 2.1

HTC promised the world an Android 2.0-based firmware for its Hero line once it figured out the nitty gritty details of porting Sense to Google’s latest code, leapfrogging Donut altogether — but now, it looks like they’re gonna do one better. Screenshots found today show a Hero running Android 2.1, which would dovetail nicely with the fact that Google had teased a “minor update” to 2.0 before the end of 2009 back when it announced Eclair last month. The interface looks largely untouched from 1.5, proof that HTC was able to bring Sense up to speed with minimum drama; it’s unclear when this’ll all be available, but considering that Sprint’s version

just got a super-minor update, some carrier-branded versions could be in for a wait.

How do I block a person's cell phone number?

Question:
Well long story short this girl keeps harassing me over text and I want to block her cell phone number. I have an HTC Touch Pro and my phone company is US Cellular. How can I block her cell phone number? Thanks!
Answer:
the easist way it to save the number to your phone directory. The edit the number so that calls from that number get sent to voice mail.

Another way is to complain to your cell provider that you are receiving harrassing calls from that number, also call her cell provider too.

Disappointed Samsung

The inevitable is going to happen. I will get myself an iPhone. On one hand I want one (let’s face facts, it’s a very very good product), on the other hand I don’t want fall into the Steve Jobs reality distortion field.

I was holding out hope for the Samsung Omnia II (Omnia Icon in some markets). It sounded like the Windows Mobile to have (aside from coming preloaded with WinMo 6.1). I recently had an opportunity to play with one in a Telstra T[life] shop and I was very disappointed. Samsung’s TouchWiz UI shell didn’t impress me (in fact it just made me think I was using their low-end F480 which everyone who’s had one seems to hate). And compared to the other smartphones around it, it’s AMOLED screen didn’t look special at all. I played with it for all of 2 minutes, got depressed, and went to see what other toys I could play with in the shop.

For comparison’s sake I also played with a HTC Touch Diamond2 which seemed to be running bog-standard WinMo 6.5 (IE without HTC’s TouchFLO UI). This is the first time I’ve played with a 6.5 powered device (although I have played with it in the emulator) and even though I know that clunky old Windows Mobile lurks just under the surface, I was pleasantly surprised as to how the new welcome and start screens worked (smooth, responsive, easy). There may be some hope for WinMo 7 after all (if MS and their OEM partners can get it right).

For now it looks like I’ll lock into an iPhone for 24 months. By then WinMo 7 will be mature and maybe the Marketplace for Mobile will have (almost) as many apps as Apple’s App Store. Or maybe Android will have taken over as mobile king-of-the-hill.

Shopping in Greenock

Yep it was time again. As the weather is bad and my weekend in Liverpool has been postponed (the Christmas market down there must be fantastic!) I decided to walk into Greenock and get the latest news from the major network providers here.

Three UK offer the HTC Hero with Spotify Premium which is nice, Orange have an ok-deal for the hero as well and Vodafone are still waiting on the HTC HD2. Thought I could have a play with it. Well will have to wait then I guess.

When to http://bit.ly/7h0sN1 and bought some timers for the house as the old ones are broken. Got some food fro M&S (I should spend less money there) and then took a taxi home as it was coming down in buckets!

Now watching The Great Escape with a nice hot pot of Chicken casserole with dumplings. Hmm yummy.

What type of phone should I get?

Question:
I'd prefer not to get an iPhone or Blackberry.
Preferably not a touchscreen, but rather a slide out QWERTY keyboard with a trackball.
It should have the internet, and a camera with 5 mega-pixels or higher.

So far I'm thinking of a Hip-top LX or a HTC Dream, but it's a bit pricey, so something below the $1000 mark would be nice.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Top 10 Cell Phones are Apple IPhone 3GS $300.00, T-Moblie myTouch 3G $150.00, T-Moblie G1 $130.00, Palm Pre $150., Nokia N97 $700., Apple iPhone 3G $100., Nokia E71 $300., HTC Hero $180., RIM BlackBerry Bold $200.00

Hero or Moment: Lesser of Two Evils?

As you probably know, I have been lusting over Sprint Android phones for about four months now.  So why haven’t I gotten one yet?  After all, the Hero’s been out since mid October, and the Moment’s been out for nearly two weeks now.

If you read my previous post, you know that there are pros and cons to each phone.  However, according to various forums, including SprintUsers.com and Sprint’s own Buzz About Wireless, it looks like both devices were rushed to market, probably to compete with Verizon’s Droid.  Here are some of the problems that have been discussed ad nauseum:

Hero:

  • Sending a text message using the built-in messaging application will prevent the device from going to sleep, thus sucking the battery dry.  There are workarounds that seem to work for a few days to a week or so. http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/23043?tstart=0
  • Dust is getting under the screen within just a few days of use. http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=196341
  • It takes as four seconds before the phone recognizes an incoming call.  Sometimes, the phone is so bogged down doing other things that it never allows you to answer the call at all. http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/23670?tstart=30
  • Bluetooth usage will incurr stackdumps that are not thrown away.  This uses memory that is not kept in check and that cannot be disposed without a reset. http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=198477
  • If the device runs with less than a certain amount of memory, it starts throwing away text messages.  Once this starts happening, the only way out is to get a new device. http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/12643-htc-working-critical-sms-voicemail-issue.html
  • Text messages don’t always reach the device. http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/121830#121830

Moment:

  • The battery meter is not accurate, by a longshot. http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/24000?tstart=30
  • A-GPS is not working (This isn’t supported by Android 1.5.  Seems like HTC added the feature and Samsung forgot to.) http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/24023?tstart=0
  • USB connectivity isn’t the best. http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/24013?tstart=0

According to Sprint, a patch for the Hero is in the works, and for the Moment in talks, so we’ll see what happens in the next few weeks.

G1 or HTC Touch Pro 2?

Question:
Recently I've posted a question regarding my sister's choices of phones. She's choosing between the HTC Touch Pro 2 and the G1 both from t-mobile. Neither of us can agree on either phones. There are the ups and downs about both phones which makes her think extra harder to which phone to get for her birthday. Pls help. WE both need specs about the pros and cons of both phones. We're trying to see which phone fits her best. give specifics about the features that she can freely use on either phones.
She likes to listen to music A LOT, shes also text a lot, browse the internet and watch videos and play games, along with taking a lot of pictures and sometimes videos. Thanks.
Answer:
ok very tough question
If you have patients windows mobile is the best right now, better than iphone too
key word being patients, my touch pro 2 can do everything anything else can do plus about 100 other great things.

Of the top, best screen on the market right now hands down, as far as US availability goes
wvga 480x800 3.6 inches!!!!!!
has better keyboard than g1 and not only slides open better but also tilts, great for watching movies
has awesome software!!! and is fully customizable including the ability to look and act like an iphone if your into that kinda bland thing. Also I would imagine android can be put on a tp2 in the future as many windows mobile devices can right now.
great battery life for what it is, better than g1
opera is imo the best browser out there with a little tweaking
best speaker phone out right now
has microsoft office and outlook great for syncing to servers
6.5 will be released soon I imagine
check out the free apps on a ms based phone compared to any other phone and theres thousands of them
remote desktop is the bomb especially on a vga device
tv out option is great for watching youtube at friends houses and presentations.
spb mobile shell enough said

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zU1Nko_0JMw&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8wUtVQYe8s&feature=related
ok ill be basic at first
g1 battery life sucks!!!
touch pro 2 is windows mobile based

Ok I have a touch pro 2, but I have been using windows mobile for years now. It is kinda hard to set up to do exactly what you want. If shes not into computers go with the my touch unless she needs a keyboard then g1.

I would go get the tp2 and try it out for the 14 days, if you dont like it get an android phone

HTC inizia la campagna “YOU”

Top 5 Android apps

You finally got your long awaited Android phone. It might be the new Motorola Droid, or even the HTC G1 you’ve had, it’ an Android based phone and you’ve got your selection of apps to download (10,000 and counting), but here are the absolute must have best apps for fun and productivity.

1. Twidroid

If you’re a Twitter user and used to the iPhone, the first thing you might notice is that Tweetie isn’t in the Android Market. Not to worry, though: Twidroid has your back. The Android-based Twitter app is available in a free and a pro (paid) version.

Both of Twidroid’s offerings provide most every Twitter function you might need, from the basic — viewing and sending tweets, following and unfollowing users, viewing profiles — to the more advanced: saved searches, URL shortening, photo posting, and geo-location support. The pro version adds support for multiple accounts, bit.ly integration, video posting, and a handful of other options. It runs about $5.

2. Meebo for Android

Twitter? Check. Instant messaging? Check. Our second featured app will keep you connected to all of your IM accounts while you’re roaming around with your new Droid. Meebo links multiple IM protocols into a single app that you can always keep running on your phone. AIM, MSN, Yahoo, MySpace IM, Google Talk, Jabber and ICQ are all supported — and, if you create a Meebo account, you can save a collective log of all your chats that’ll be accessible online.

The Meebo for Android app is free.

3. Pandora on Android

Crank up the tunes on your new Droid immediately by installing Pandora’s Android app, available for free in the Android Market. Like its online and on-the-iPhone counterpart, the Pandora Android app lets you listen to personalized radio stations based on your favorite artists or songs. Thanks to Android’s multitasking capabilities, you’ll be able to rock out while running other apps — something the iPhone can’t handle.

4. Google Voice for Mobile

File this one under “outlawed on iPhone,” too. The official Google Voice for Mobile app fully integrates Google Voice functionality into your new Droid phone. Once installed, you can make outgoing calls from your Google Voice number with the touch of a button, right from your contacts list. You also gain easy access to voicemail and Google Voice-based SMS messaging.

The Google Voice for Mobile app is free to install and use. You do need to have an existing Google Voice account, however, for it to work.

5. KeyRing

Get rid of all those annoying membership cards with KeyRing, an Android app that puts your barcodes into your Motorola Droid. Simply scan your various cards — anything from gym memberships to drug store discount clubs — and Key Ring will categorize them into a drop-down menu.

The next time you need a card, you just pull it up on your phone — no need to actually carry the physical piece of plastic.

So there you have it: 5 Android apps to get your Android device working. There are so many more to explore, so help your fellow Androiders out and leave your recommendations below.

HTC e o TouchFLO

The GSM on Telus Roundup

Telus has launched the GSM network, and their naming it the 3G+ network. They god new phones, as well as new, great plans.

HTC Hero (On Telus Website)

The HTC Hero is running Android, but with the HTC Sense UI on top of it, that allows for more than a dozen of widgets, and 7 home screens. It has a 5 MP camera with video capture, bluetooth, a microSD slot, and a gorgeous 3.2 inch capacitive touch display. On the Telus website, it says that theres no WiFi, but the phone specifications on the HTC website clearly state that it has 802.11b/g WiFi. The phone comes in black (a little more like brown) or white. It’ll cost you 99.99 on a 3-year contract, but 399.99 on a 2-year, and 49.99 off-contract. That’s exactly what I didn’t want them too do.

BlackBerry Bold2 (9700) (On Telus Website)

The Bold2 is a newer version of the chubby, older Blackberry Bold; it has a nice, curve-like body, but still keeps the leather back which I’ve grown to love (my best friend has the original Bold). It comes loaded with a 3.2 MP camera with video capture and flash, bluetooth, BlackBerry OS 5.0, micro-SD slot, and WiFi. But it’ll cost you, 249.99 on a 3-year contract (20 more than Bell’s pricing), and 649.99 off contract.

Nokia E71 (On Telus Website)

Telus also decided to get the E71 into its line. Its a great smartphone, and has video calling. It has bluetooth, WiFi, a facebook application, a 3.2 MP Camera with flash and auto focus, plus a VGA camera for video calling (which is new). It’ll cost you only 29.99 on a 3-year contract, and 329 off-contract and comes in black and red.

“New” LG Chocolate (On Telus Website)

This version of the chocolate comes with a great 4″ capacitive touch widescreen display (when in landscape mode) and Dolby mobile sound. It comes with WiFi, Bluetooth, a microSD slot, and a 5MP camera. It runs a “S-Class” Touch UI with 4 home-screens. Telus is pricing this one as a smartphone, 99.99 on a 3-year contract, and 499.99 off-contract.

iPhone (On Telus Website)

The iPhone 3GS is available, incorporating iPhone OS 3.1, a 3.2MP camera with video capture, GPS with a digital compass, Bluetooth, and the App Store. It’s available starting at 199.95 for 16 GB, and 299.95 for 32 GB. The iPhone 3G is also available for 99.99, for 8Gb but no compass or video capture. The 3GS comes in black or white, and 3G in black. Theres nothing on the website about off-contract pricing, but that should be changed soon.

New Plans

Telus also released new plans. They call them Clear Choice plans. They have Smartphone plans for individuals and for shared users, which start at 50$ for 100+5 bonus minutes, Unlimited Local talk and text with 5 numbers or double minutes, or 100 outgoing texts. It also comes with 500 MB of data, Voicemail 3, and more. It could be upgraded more for more minutes, data, and better choices. The iPhone plans also have sharing or individual versions. The pricing’s all the same as the smartphone plans though. The dumb phone plans also come in individual and shared versions, starting (individual) at 30$ for 100 minutes+50 bonus, Unlimited Local talk and text with 5 numbers, or double minutes, or 100 outgoing texts, voicemail 3, and more. The mobile high-speed plans start at 30$ for 500 MB, and go all the way to 85$ for 5 GB.

In addition to all these great phones and plans, Telus also has a new Internet Key that works on HSPA+, and you could also buy a sim card to use an unlocked phone.

Campanha publicitária HTC "YOU" - HTC YOU campaign

A Fubiz flagrou e deixou a dica. Curta abaixo.

Ad critique 2

HTC: You Are Different from You – YAY

Two things have recently become unbearable: ads reminding us of the economic recession and ads overemphasizing individualism. Yes, we enjoy being individuals. After all, that’s what it means to be an American. But while advertising’s emphasis on the individual is relevant today, we don’t need Captain Obvious as our source of repetition.

HTC does a good job of emphasizing “you,” but does so in a new way. Traditionally, ads have said something along the lines of “which means more ____ for YOU!” or “giving YOU more time for _____.” What HTC does it illustrate these things in action. Instead of saying (at 0:25) “leaving you worry-free,” for example, this ad shows the woman worrying. This humanizes the voiceover, and shows just the alternative instead of the alternative and the solution. In other words, instead of weighing the bad (worrying) and the good (being worry-free) side by side, this commercial implies the good by using the bad. Captain Obvious is nowhere to be found.

Aside from all that, the music and voiceover are bouncy. The commercial moves quickly but isn’t forced. And most of all, the punch line at the end is flawless. The entire spot leads into the tagline and then the company is introduced creatively with “…and we, are HTC.”

Carlsberg: Bathtub – NAY

Aside from the awkwardness of this print ad, creating something like this is risky because it can easily offend women. It is somewhat similar to Snicker’s 2007 Superbowl ad where the offensiveness isn’t completely there, but it’s to the point where it shouldn’t have made it past the creative director.

This Carlsberg ad could have gone in so many directions. The concept itself has legs. In fact, I briefly remade it (see below) with the same strategy in mind. Excuse the visuals.

Apple iPhone; Pretty dumb for a “Smartphone”

ZOMG! He’s got an iPhone! Lets all worship him and give him salutes every time he passes by! This the mentality of many people have with iPhones, but the point is, when you come to think of it, the iPhone isn’t THAT much of an engineering marvel, just an overhyped slice of Apple pie. Your opinion may be different, but here’s the lowdown;

  1. Performance; 600MHz ARM Cortex A8 application processor, PowerVR HW Graphics Acceleration and 256 MB of RAM. Definitely nothing exciting like nVidia Tegra or Creative Zii here. Now, the Sony Ericson Satio and Samsung i8910HD both have pretty much the same hardware specs as the 3GS, but no-ones hyping about that are they? Sure, these two phones aren’t as responsive as the iPhone, but I’ll tell you exactly why.
  2. Cutting Corners; How does the iPhone achieve such a smooth user experience using the same old (or new technically) hardware as many other phones? Cutting corners of course! Why is photo browsing so smooth? Because iTunes converts them before they’re transferred onto the phone. Why does the iPhone have such a low resolution display? So that the processor doesn’t have to work its ass off redrawing screen elements. Why can’t you multi-task? Because it would make scrolling a crawl (just try downloading a podcast and browsing a list, you’ll see what I mean)
  3. Wheres the Flash?; Ok, when I say “flash”, I really do mean both of them, the Camera and more importantly, the browser. Ever wondered why the browser on the iPhone is so fast? Well, the absence of flash pretty much sums it up.
  4. More apps make the iPhone “better”, but not necessarily smarter; If you want to E-mail someone’s Facebook, then you’d have to download the Facebook app, if you want to check the weather, you have to load the weather app and and if you want to check your Twitter, well there’s an app for that as well. This definitely doesn’t follow the general trend that people want information faster, as something like the Nokia N97 would display all this information quickly on the home screen, Palm Pre would merge your contacts seamlessly together, but with the iPhone, you just get a bland grid of icons. Sure its minimalist, but definitely not up to date.
  5. Music and Video, what music and video? From what I can see, the iPhone obviously strikes out as a multimedia phone with its iPod based music player and large display, however, just because it does a lot of things, it doesn’t exactly mean it does them well. Frequency response might be brilliant and flat, but music sounds exactly that, flat with no life, and as for video playback, you could look elsewhere as contrast ratios on the LCD are unbelievably bad. That’s just comparing it to the HTC Diamond 2 (which doesn’t have the best display in the world), but comparing it to the Samsung i8910HD’s AMOLED display just makes it look pathetic.
  6. “Sorry, I think the receptions bad, can you repeat that?” This phrase is used so often when I make calls on my iPhone, I might as well just tape record it and play it when necessary. For a phone, call quality and reception is terrible, and this is totally not expected coming from a high end phone is it?

So you see, the iPhone isn’t that revolutionary when you come to think of it. Sure it’s iconic and somewhat useful with the thousands of (mainly useless) apps, but when you compare it directly with some of the other phones in its class, it really doesn’t give the same impression as it once did.

I must dash though; I’d better upload this before I lose my 3G signal.

What verizon phone should i get.?

Question:
HTC Imagio
The Blackberry Storm 2
Samsung Rogue
Motorola Droid
I know the droid isnt out yet but look at the video reviews on youtube. i seen some good ones and it looks very cool. thanks
Answer:
There's so much talk about the "Motorola Droid" the best phone verizon has ever had, or at least in a while. I've also seen pictures and it looks quite nice, running the android os, the expectations are really high on that phone. We wouldn't know until it comes out.

As for the HTC Imagio it looks nice, supports Verizon TV. Other than that I personally don't see anything special about the phone, great size screen though. I would defentely prefer the HTC Touch Pro 2 over the Imagio.

Blackberry storm 2. I guess its just the somewhat upgrade to the original storm, looks the same nothing changed in the hardware besides the screen.

Samsung Rogue is just a feature phone with touch screen and full qwerty keyboard. Nice in its own way but I don't think it can be compared to the Imagio, or BB storm 2.

Overall i think that it depends most of all on what necessarily you're looking for. Out of all those phones you listed I would probably wait for the Motorola Droid is not long till it comes out. Perhaps a few weeks. But defentely consider the HTC Touch Pro 2 as well. good luck.

My phone tells the weather. Literally.

Currently, the weather is a very popular app and necessity that people like to find out. It is practically on every phone available from the iPhone to the HTC Hero. The HTC Hero’s interface is beautiful, but the Window Phone has gone to the next level. Rain droplets appear if its raining and the screen fogs up if its snowy. Another cool feature is when you blow on the phone, it brings up a handwriting recognition software and you can write letters, numbers and symbols by writing in the mist.

A Review: HTC Hero

I bought a HTC Hero last friday. Comes in a very small white hard box, so small you might thought it’s a budget, no frill phone.
First impression when I took it out of the box: Robust, heavy, feels good in the hand.
Power up the phone and I waited for maybe more than a minute to be able to start using the phone.

The optical ball seems like a good idea, but i seldom used it once I get used to poking the screen. The only time I used it is for the camera. You have to press the ball to capture an image, not good for self portrait. Second thing not good: no flash! So night shot is dark. Third thing not good: slow to take a picture. So, not really a camera replacement. Only good, u can pin point where you want the camera to focus by touching the screen.

The design is the update of the once-upon-a-time Nokia banana phone. That is not good as it does not work on a standard phone holder in the car, I dropped it thrice due to its shape. Now I placed it horizontal, since the screen can tilt anyway (it has accelerometer) but still not as secure.

Now all the good parts. The phone can be charged using your laptop via USB. Charging takes about the same time as most power hungry phone.

Touchscreen buttons are always not as good as a physical keypad but I managed to survive by used the virtual keypad, after a while, I can be equally as fast. As an after thought, it took me just as much time as any other phone to learn it, there after it’s fun all the way. I am still learning it now since I am still exploring, but it’s great dicovery.

Like most interactive user interface that is not an apple or microsoft, you can customise your ”desktop” with the applications that you will use most of the time. The widgets are great. One thing that surprizes me (might not be new to others) is the clock that updates itself without any setting up. Actually, the phone did not need much of a setting up. It is up and running within a minute. It even telling me the weather of the exact location, not the country or city but the town! WiFi is auto, and no set up for the internet as well.

SMS is like a chat platform. Contact search is the same just that it doesn’t go back to the top when you have gone to the bottom, so that’s a boring part but the contact itself is now linked to facebook and twitter, and that is very neat! You can read about your contacts’ everyday living just like the facebook lite and, you can scroll through their recent updated photos just the same way as you would in your photo gallery, meaning, it’s fast and efficient. Viewing the photo, I have to add, is like photoshop.com.

Its Android so it is everything google. Gmail is already there for you. Google map is great as a simple GPS, signal is good. Internet upload is fast. As is most latest touchscreen, you can pinch to enlarge or reduce and move through a full webpage, so I don’t need to view lite versions any more and the bookmark is like google chrome, I like! I tried the Youtube last night, streaming is fast, or maybe it’s already loaded somewhere. So far, all the applications I have used, there is no lagging!

Call wise, it’s loud and clear although sometimes it’s broken reception. Could be the service provider and not the phone’s fault though, I do not know for sure.

Synchronising with the PC takes a bit of setting up but after that its working the same way as most phones.

Power consumption is bad the last few days. I had to charge everyday, but what do you expect, I am exploring and using all the functions extensively… so not a good benchmark.

I am still happy as of today, it’s a definite major upgrade from my Nokia E71. Good phone!

Palm Pre or HTC Hero (Sprint)?

Question:
Which of these 2 phones do you guys recommend. Im upgrading from my old rumor which i dont even like. Im debating between these 2 phones for sprint. Can you guys fill me in on what you think! I could get the palm pre today or way until Oct. 11 and get the HTC Hero. What do you guys think? Please be descriptive. I want to make the right choice.

Thanks
Answer:
Well as of right now I have owned both. I liked the Palm but Hardware doesnt hold up, and it mulitasks very well. As to features the Hero Blows it out of the water. The Hero has a bigger screen, and is multitouch just like the pre. The hardware feels more stable. Back to features, Android which is the OS on the Hero has around 5 to 8 THOUSAND apps available in the market place, the Pre has like 40. The comment about who is HTC is dumb, HTC is the leader in smartphones. They sale more then any other company.

Oh one big issue I had with the Pre is battery life, it was HORRIBLE. I was afraid to look at my phone because it would drop about 5% every time I turned it on to check something. If I only responded to texts or took 1 or 2 calls it would last about 6 hours before needing to be charged. So far with the Hero I went a good 6 hours nonstop on it and I still had half a battery.

Can a SMS backup application be used for all kinds of operating system?

Question:
Can a SMS backup application be used for all kinds of operating system? I am using HTC Mega and my SMS backup app cannot work.I wonder whether it is because the operating system.
Answer:
Maybe it is because of that problem. You are using HTC Mega, then your operating system is Microsoft Windows Mobile 6,right?
You can try this one: GodswMobile SMS Transfer. Visit the following website for more details:

HTC HD2 Renders Hero Obsolete

Okay, HTC. You really gotta stop doing this. Killing off your newly launched products with something that renders everything else obsolete 1 month into it’s lifespan. Now, after watching this. My HTC Hero feels like a freaking 8bit gaming device while the HTC HD2 – a PlayStation 3 Xbox360. Eh, wait a minute. It’s WinMo! And the weather widget is such an OVERKILL! (Sour grapes)

Ny mobil snart

HTC sine androidtelefoner virker mye mer tiltalende.

Johan Huss testar HTC Touch 2 – ny Windows phone

HTC Hero Upgrade Delayed On T-Mobile

We love the HTC Hero and its swish take on Android, but one of the big problems it suffered from was the lag when it came to switching between screens and apps. HTC’s recent ROM update goes along way to dealing with those woes, but there’s a snag: if you’ve got a T-Mobile branded HTC Hero, the G2 Touch, you can’t get it yet. Read on to scope the ins and outs of what’s going on.

Anyone with a regular HTC Hero can head on over to the Taiwanese phone maker’s site and download the new ROM, but owners of branded Heros like the G2 Touch are being left out in the cold. The reason? T-Mobile is testing the update before rolling it out, and it’s not yet said how long it will take.

Should i get an unlocked htc hero (EU) version and put my AT&T sim card in it?

Question:
I've been thinking about getting an unlocked htc hero and putting my at&t sim card in it. I have heard though that the EDGE speeds aren't that fast since that is all you can use with the phone. Are the EDGE speeds really not that good? Or are they good enough to still consider getting the phone?
Answer:
The EU Hero, should run on 3G as well as EDGE networks. There is a speed difference, but it's not massive. In theory, it's 236kbps for EDGE vs 384kbps for 3G but obviously that depends on your location, signal and operator. Source(s): www.android-fone.co.uk

What The Peep Is Happening?

Peep – the Twitter Application by HTC was running smoothly since I got the phone on Saturday. This morning, weird shit started happening with my HTC Hero. The weather widget kept showing a moon with clouds despite it being 1pm in the afternoon and Peep kept crashing on me whenever I do a refresh for new Twitter messages. Did a quick search on Android forums and seems like its a global thing. Is this HTC’s doing or maybe the ROM got screwed? Gonna give it a day or two before deciding if I should roll back to the original Malaysian ROM. Tapping fingers while waiting ….

HTC Image Shift

We have mentioned it before but it seems to have come to press again.  HTC, whom you can’t failed to have heard of are trying to reinvent themselves through a shift in product design and marketing focus.

“HTC are trying to make their designs more "people-centric," according Claude Zellweger, a partner at One & Co (HTC owned consultancy firm).

The intention is to make general consumers more aware of the brand and make interactivity with devices more fun and interesting.

This shift in model has begun through their range of Google handsets, most specifically the HTC Hero, which comes in an array of colours.

So what more can we expect from HTC.  It is difficult to predict but the new HTC Tattoo and Touch2 shows more signs of individualism.

Zellweger said“We’re not scared to go places people haven’t gone yet.” Sounds interesting?!

We will bring you more information on the HTC image transition as and when we hear more.

Help needed with phone change process in T-Mobile..?

Question:
I've switched to t-mobile about 3-4 months ago and i had bought the dash 3g. However, a new phone (htc touch pro 2) just came on the market for $350 with the contract. I want to switch to that phone. If I went to my neighborhood t-mobile store, would they let me buy the phone for $350 or would I have to pay extra since i'm already a customer for 3-4 months? Thank you so much for the help. =]
Answer:
You would have to pay what is commonly called an "early upgrade" It will give you a discount, but it will not be $350 price tag. I would imagine it to be around $470, possibly more. Source(s): T-Mobile Cust Care Rep - 4 years

HTC Touch Phone- Help! I messed up my camera!!?

Question:
I have NO idea how I did it, but I've screwed up the photo options! When I take pics, they are only thumbnail-sized. Even when I upload them to my PC, they stay thumbnail-sized. How do I get it back to where I can take full-sized pics??? I can't even seem to find the solution in my user manual. All help appreciated!
Answer:
Open the camera. Look at the lower center. Tap the up pointing arrow. When the menu pops up, select the resolution you want. Try M or L to start.
Hope that helps.

HTC Tattoo: Android 1.6 (Donut) personalizable

  • Procesador: Qualcomm MSM7225 (528 MHz)
  • ROM: 512 MB, RAM: 256 MB, ranura MicroSD
  • Pantalla: 2,8 pulgadas (240 x 320 puntos por pulgada)
  • Dimensiones y peso: 10,6 x 5,5 x 1,4 centímetros y 113 gramos
  • Cámara: 3,2 Megapíxeles
  • Conectividad: Bluetooth 2.0, GPS, WiFi (802.11 b/g)
  • Otras: Acelerómetro, Brújula digital, Radio FM

HTC Leo, 4,3 pulgadas y procesador a 1 GHz

HTCC9 Advantage (UK, QWERTY, GPS)

HTCC9 Advantage (UK, QWERTY, GPS) Review

Truely the best PDA I have tried. Most helpful for a physcian! I have used 7 earlier PDA over last 6 years, none was so helpful.

I found its large screen ideal to review powerpoint presentations; its speaker reasonably clear(not as nokia’s, however! but better and louder than the other PDA speakers I have tried before); its huge memory very helpful; its relatively strong processor allowed easy opening of files that would have been impossible to open by any earlier PDAs even those with processor 512!

But: the first HTC/7500 I bought was malfunctioning and needed replacement; the programm applications installed outside the main memory were lost on just soft resetting; and it has no choice of turning speaker off unless an earpiece or bluetooth is used. The latter two points are obvious shortcomings but for me did not affect my satisfaction about this PDA.

Quick question about cell phones (the smartphones...) with win mobile?

Question:

can you upgrade that... so like hte current version is 6.1, can you upgrade that to 6.5, when that comes out (is it for free).... i am talking about the smartphones with windows mobile on it.... (HTC touch)... oh and another thing... like rumors say, windows 7 mobile is coming out in 2010.... will hte market be realeasing same phones with that system... or will it be phones with the old one...

in other words... suppose the blackberry runs 6.1 right now... but lets say in 2 weeks 6.5 is released... and i buy a phone 2 weeks after the release date of windows mobile 6.5.. will my phone be a 6.win 6.5, or still be 6.1

Answer:

first of all the os on blackberry is 4.5 for 8100 and higher for newer models so its in the 4.5 and above.

you can either purchase a newer os or find it for free on the internet =).

you can upgrade it howmuch ever cause my freind has a blackberry and he upgraded it for free.

if you buy a phone 2 or 3 days b4 the upgrade, then more than likely it should have it. if its older than you have to find a website and upgrade it.

GL

IF you tell me the exact details of your phone like model, and os and which version of the os then ill try to find the newset ones.
